EMDR INTENSIVE THERAPY

Imagine feeling relief in just a few days and saving yourself months of therapy by achieving results quicker.

EMDR Intensive Therapy is the answer.

EMDR Intensives allow us to do deeper work in a focused period of time.

Instead of processing things slowly over many months of weekly therapy, an intensive creates dedicated space to work directly with the root experiences that may still be impacting how you feel, think, and respond today.

Many people find that this format helps them move through meaningful healing in a shorter amount of time and feels safer knowing you have time to go deep without rushing or having to drag out experiences.

The traditional model of weekly/bi-weekly psychotherapy simply doesn't meet the needs of everyone. Now more than ever, we need flexibility in how we get support, and EMDR intensives can provide this.

This is a good fit for you if:

  • You’ve been meaning to get into weekly therapy for a while now, but your schedule has been so hectic and demanding that a weekly therapy appointment feels more overwhelming than supportive.

  • 1 hour of therapy never feels like quiet enough. You are tired of opening and closing different memories/emotions every week and would prefer to get through it without watching the clock.

  • You have a therapist you see on a regular basis but think an EMDR Intensive would be a good addition to the work you guys are already doing.

  • You want to begin regular scheduled sessions but really want a jump start on your work.

  • You feel emotionally ready to engage in deeper meaningful therapeutic work

This is not be the best fit if you’re experiencing active safety concerns, prefer a slower pace with shorter sessions, or aren’t able to dedicate the time needed for an intensive. If an intensive isn’t the right fit, I’m happy to help you explore other options or referrals.

How the Process Works

Step 1: Connection Call

Connect with me for brief video call to make sure an intensive is a good fit for you.

During this call we will:

  • Talk about what you’re hoping to work on

  • Answer questions about EMDR intensives

  • Determine whether this format is a good fit

  • Look at scheduling options

If this feels like the right next step, we’ll schedule your preparation session and intensive day(s).

Step 2: Intake & Preparation Session

2 Hour Session - at least one week before your first intensive day and is billed separately at the standard session rate.

During this session we will:

  • Review your history and goals to focus on

  • Build grounding and regulation skills to support the work

  • Identify target memories or experiences for EMDR

  • Prepare your nervous system for deeper processing

  • Create a personalized intensive plan

This step is important because it allows us to use the intensive session time effectively and safely.

Step 3: Intensive Day(s)

Each intensive day is 5 hours of focused EMDR therapy.

You can choose 1-4 intensive days, depending on the amount of work you’d like to focus on.

A typical intensive day looks like:

  • 2.5 hours

    • Check-in and grounding

    • Identifying the memory or theme we are targeting

    • EMDR Processing

  • 30 min. - 1 hour break

    • You choose which feels right.

    • We can also do short breaks to rest and regulate throughout.

  • 2.5 Hours

    • Continued EMDR Work

    • Integration and Closing

Scheduling Guidelines:

  • Intensive days must be scheduled within a 2-month time frame

  • No more than 2 intensive days per week

The pace is collaborative and adjusted to what your nervous system needs. You’re welcome to bring comfortable items, snacks, or anything that helps you feel supported.

Step 4: Post-Intensive Session

45 Minute Follow Up Session - Optional

We schedule this about 2 weeks after our last intensive day.

During this session we will:

  • Review what came up during the intensive

  • Celebrate the peace you’re feeling now

  • Discuss any remaining goals if needed

  • If additional support is need:

    • Some choose to do another intensive months later. We can schedule this then or you can reach back out whenever needed.

    • Some clients continue with their own therapist. I am happy to connect with your therapist to ensure things have a smooth transition.

    • Some prefer to continue ongoing standard sessions with me.

Frequently Asked Questions about Intensives

  • An intensive may be a good fit if you:

    • Feel ready to work directly on specific memories, triggers, or experiences

    • Have already done some therapy and want to go deeper or move through something more quickly

    • Prefer focused work instead of spreading sessions out over many months

    • Have the ability to set aside a full day for your healing and recovery

An intensive may not be the best fit right now if you are currently in a very unstable season of life, feeling highly overwhelmed day-to-day, or needing more ongoing support and stabilization first.

If you’re unsure, that’s completely okay. The consultation call is designed to help us determine together whether an intensive would feel supportive and appropriate for you.

  • You don’t need it, no.

Many clients do find it helpful when they want to jumpstart some progress and then work through smaller things on a bi-weekly schedule.

  • You can choose between 1-4.

Some clients choose 1 day to focus on a specific experience, while others schedule multiple days to work through several memories or themes. I usually recommend 2 sessions for my clients.

If you want more days after, we can always schedule more (without the need for the intake session prior).

If we complete 1 or more day(s) and you don’t want the others, there is no charge for canceling - as long as enough notice is given.

  • I offer virtual intensives and in-person intensives at my office in Wilson, NC.

  • Nope. Intensive days can be spaced out however feels comfortable for you.

However, they must take place within a 2 month period and cannot exceed 2 intensive days per week.

  • Intensives are private pay.

I can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement for the 2 hour intake session only.

I do not provide a super bill for the intensive day sessions.

  • That’s actually very normal to wonder about. EMDR doesn’t rely on you “doing it right” or forcing memories to come up. Your brain naturally processes information during the process, and my role is to guide the structure and pacing.

Some people experience clear emotional shifts during the session, while others notice changes in the days or weeks afterward. Both are normal and part of how the brain processes.

  • That’s normal. You are allowed to cry and feel emotional. Strong emotions can come up when we process meaningful experiences, and that is a normal part of the healing process. The intensive is structured to move at a pace your nervous system can handle.

We take breaks, use grounding strategies, and make sure you feel supported throughout the day.

You are never expected to push through something that feels like too much and some people don’t cry at all. There is no right or wrong way… it’s just your way.

  • Many people feel mentally or emotionally tired after doing deeper processing work, which is a natural response when your brain has been doing meaningful work.

Most clients plan for a low-key evening after their intensive day so they can rest, hydrate, and give their mind time to integrate what was processed.

We’ll also talk about ways to support yourself between intensive days if you schedule more than one. If you would like to add on a massage or another self-care activity, I would be happy to set you up with someone local to do so.
